The Phantom of the Opera
Costume design: Alex Byrne.
The work produced for “Phantom of the Opera” was
primerily trimmings and small details. Some of them are shown left.
Several meters of lace were embroidered for the white dressing
gown worn by “Christine” played by Emmy Rossum.
The pink transparent veil was made for the character
“Charlotta” played by Minnie Driver. The picture is of a sample,
whereas the actual embroidery was sewn on a beautiful piece of
organza in tone with the costume.
Nine shirt fronts were embroidered for “Raoul”
played by Patrick Wilson. This great number of repeats was needed
for stand ins and stunt doubles. It is interesting to see how a
very simple edge motif in the hands of a skilled shirt maker suddenly
looks completely incorporated giving the garment a lovely authentic
feel.
